Alert bay

Alert Bay, located on Cormorant Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island, is a treasure trove for wildlife enthusiasts. While the village itself boasts a rich cultural heritage of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation, its surrounding waters are the stars of the show. Here, orcas, often referred to as killer whales, reign supreme. Johnstone Strait, close by, is known for having the world’s largest concentration of these magnificent creatures, with up to 200 gathering in the summer. But that’s not all! Sea lions, porpoises, dolphins, and a variety of bird species like loons and harlequin ducks call Alert Bay home, making it a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the wonders of British Columbia’s wildlife.
