The Cicada orni, commonly known as the Mediterranean orni cicada, is a species of cicada found in the Mediterranean region, including Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East. Recognized for its distinctive singing, the male Cicada orni produces a loud, buzzing sound that contributes to the characteristic chorus of cicadas during the warm summer months. These insects are well-adapted to hot climates and are often found in diverse habitats, ranging from coastal areas to inland regions. With their transparent wings and large compound eyes, Cicada orni are skilled fliers, and their life cycle involves a prolonged nymph stage spent underground before emerging as adults. While their songs are a quintessential part of the summer soundscape, Cicada orni also serve ecological roles, contributing to nutrient cycling as their nymphs feed on plant roots and adults play a role in pollination.
